BAKO’s commitment to developing future talent has been recognised at a national level after its Young Bakers Initiative secured a silver medal at the Britain’s Best Cake competition.

The award-winning Irish Coffee Slice, developed by students Ella Muddiman and Naomi Spaven, took silver in the traybake category at the event, held on Monday 13 April at the NEC Birmingham during the Food & Drink Show.

The Young Bakers Initiative, delivered in partnership with Wrights Food Group and Coleg Cambria, aimed to bridge the gap between education and the baking industry by enabling students to develop commercially viable products.

David Armstrong, Group Commercial Director at BAKO said: “This award is a strong endorsement of both the Young Bakers Initiative and the commercial potential of student-led innovation. As a leading UK supplier of bakery ingredients and finished products, BAKO works closely with independent bakers and foodservice operators, and we understand the importance of bringing fresh ideas to market.

“The initiative was developed to connect education with industry in a meaningful way, enabling students to create products with genuine commercial viability. In partnership with Wrights Food Group, who brought the manufacturing expertise to scale these concepts, we’ve created a model that delivers both innovation and skills development.

“Ella and Naomi’s Irish Coffee Slice is a perfect example of that success, a product that not only moved from concept to national launch but has now achieved recognition at Britain’s Best Cake. It reinforces the value of investing in future talent while delivering exciting new products for our customers.”
